First Step Taken
I recently posted my profile on the ECT community site. It looks like it's been up and running for about a year now. I'm a new student in the MA program and I'm still learning the ropes. I'm not sure what's appropriate, so I've decided to keep a separate blog off the site. That way I can be more personal and reflective without feeling too self-conscious. I plan to take the best of my thoughts and post them on the community site, while using this space as a sandbox.
The metaphor I'm using for my blog is that of a pilot's log. A mentor of mine mentioned that he was planning on writing a book to serve the same purpose that pilot's and captain's log were written: to act as a guide for future pilots and captains to learn from.
So while this log is a journal for me to reflect on, I realize that it's unique because I'm sharing it with the world through the Internet instead of hiding it in my desk drawer to be discovered some time in the future.
I've been thinking of a lot of things while doing the assigned reading for my course, Instructional Design for Media Environments. One of the things that has been frequently on my find is the overlap between different disciplines: software engineering, filmmaking, and instructional design. Of course, these are all very different fields of practice, but the patterns each uses are very similar. The good news is that I enjoy all of the disciplines -- in fact, I can't seem to choose between them.
However, now I don't have to -- I can incorporate all of them. It's all a matter of getting organized.
